FAQs
- Do I need any martial arts experience?
-
No. When you arrive at the gym we will give you all the basic knowledge you need to train safely and effectively.
- Do I need to be fit?
-
No, personal training is tailored around your current fitness levels. If you want to come to a gym class then remember to go at your own pace.
- I’m a bit nervous to join in a class but I would like to learn Thai Boxing. What should I do?
-
Personal training sessions will be perfect for you. You will learn very quickly and then you can join in the gym classes when you are more confident.
- I’m 40, am I too old?
-
I hope not, so am I! Our adult classes have an age range of 16 and up.
- I have kids who want to start. What age do you take them from?
-
Our kids classes are 8-15/16 years
- Do I need any equipment?
-
No. We have all the equipment you will need at the Harrogate Gym.
- What should I wear?
-
It’s best to wear tracksuit/sweatshirt or shorts t-shirt depending on temperature. Because the Harrogate Gym floor is padded, we usually train barefoot, but bring trainers too.
- Do you do lots of fitness in your classes?
-
The Thai and MMA classes always begin with a warm-up and some stretching which lasts around 10 minutes. The rest of the time is spent developing good technique. There are some classes which are more fitness based like the ladies fit to kick and of course Kettlebells.
- Are the classes full contact? I don’t want to get my nose broken!
-
Most training in classes is done with a partner. You will have to hold pads for each other, and although contact is light to start with it will increase over time. Our defensive practice is done at a slow pace with the emphasis on good technique. Hard sparring is only done by people who wish to compete. Private lessons are tailored to suit each persons requirements, so if you don’t want to spar then you don't have to.
- I would like to learn to defend myself, do you only do Thai boxing?
-
We have learnt many self defence moves from other martial arts such as aikido, jiu jitsu, judo, etc, including takedowns, knife defence, and submissions. However there are many moves in Thai Boxing which are also excellent in street situations.
- I am recovering from an injury/ illness/ condition. Is your training suitable for me?
-
A doctors advice must always be sought prior to any training. Personal training can usually be tailored to suit needs, and classes may also be suitable, but contact me first to discuss your best option.
- I want to come to the classes. Do I need a partner?
-
No, there are other people who come to the Harrogate gym classes who will be on there own. We will make sure that you are partnered with someone of your own level.
- Are there many girls in your gym classes?
-
Yes, the split is about 65% boys, 35% girls.
- How long will I need to train before I can compete?
-
Your development must reach the stage where you are capable of defending yourself effectively. Attacking is easy. People do badly in competition when they cannot defend. Usually this takes 1-2 years training.
After reaching this stage you will be able to enter sparring competitions, then amateur full contact, pro-am, and finally professional bouts.
