The term Mixed Martial Arts was a term first used in 1995. The first forms of modern competition were started in Japan in 1985, with the first UFC fight in 1993. However the early Greeks practiced Pankration and the Brazilians Vale Tudo from the early 1920's. UFC president Dana White calls Bruce Lee "the father of MMA" because he said the best martial art is that which takes from all arts and uses only what works. It is generally thought that Muay Thai is the best for standing, Wrestling the best for takedowns, and Jiu Jutsu the best for submissions.
Todays modern MMA rules were formed in the year 2000 and are those used in UFC and Strikeforce today.
In the UK there are 3 levels of competition, C-Class with no head contact, B-Class with head contact in stand-up phase, and A-Class with head contact in both stand-up and ground phases.
A-Class fighters from UK are proving themselves to be amongst the world's elite, and are closely followed by many others. Fighters like Michael Bisping and Dan Hardy have blazed the trail and contributed to MMA being the UK's fastest growing Martial Art.
